It's May in Indy, so going to IMS is a must-do! Whether you've been to the track before or you're bringing your kids for the first time- there is a lot of prep work before you go! This will be my third year taking my kiddos and I still follow this list.

WHAT TO BRING:
There are a few things as a parent that I’ve learned to always bring to IMS (especially if you have littles). No matter if it's a practice day or race day!
Protective ear muffs: The track is LOUD and kiddos ears can be much more sensitive. Bluetooth headphones are not enough, so I’d recommend these! I got some for my youngest when he was just 1.5 years old and they worked great.
Sun Protection: Events like races and practices are completely outside and not all of the seating is shaded, so do not forget your SPF! Be sure to pack non-aerosol sunscreen (aerosol sunscreen is not allowed). I also recommend hats and sunglasses for everyone!
Food and drinks: One thing I LOVE about IMS is that you can bring in your own food and drink. Bring multiple bottles of water and pack plenty of snacks for everyone (including yourself)! You can absolutely get food at IMS and we’ve definitely done it, but lines can get really long during busy times and little kids don’t always want to wait. ALSO- No glass bottles/containers are allowed in. For race days, it’s not a bad idea to also pack an easy meal like sandwiches because you’ll probably be there much longer than you would on a practice day.
Coolers: If you’re bringing kiddos– I highly recommend a backpack cooler if you have one because they’re much easier to carry, but whatever cooler you choose, just make sure it’s smaller than 18” x 15” x 15”.
Stroller & Wagons: Strollers and Wagons are allowed into IMS for every event, except for the Indy 500. Wagons are not allowed at the Indy 500, so bring a stroller that day! I HIGHLY recommend you bring one for any event you’re going to with littles. I’ve definitely made the mistake and have carried my kiddos all across IMS. Not super fun! FYI- The staff at IMS is very helpful in helping you navigate areas that are stroller friendly and where you can park them while you sit in the grandstands!
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW:
In-field Seating: If you have general admission tickets to the Indy 500, you will want to bring something comfy to sit on– blankets and small chairs are great!
Bringing Toys: My kiddos love to bring toys everywhere, & I mean everywhere. So if you’ve got kiddos like me, try to have them only pick 1-2 small ones. IMS is HUGE & it’s not easy to retrace your steps if you lose them. I’ve got two boys & our go-to toys to help keep them occupied during slower times of the day are hot wheels. Small, cheap, & easily replaceable if anything happens!
Kid Zone & the Midway: If you are going to qualifying weekend or the Indy 500, be sure to stop by The Midway near Pagoda Plaza. We’ ve found some really fun activities in the Midway and the Kid Zone is also free! There are lots of activities for them to do! See the Kid Zone schedule here!
Navigating IMS: IMS can feel intimidating to navigate if you’ve never been before, but it's okay! I always check out the map before I go, even though I’ve been a few times already! When you arrive, grab a free shuttle (just look for the pick up points.) There are also handicap accessible shuttles that are stroller friendly. Definitely worth waiting on if you have a big stroller! And make sure to stop by the Pagoda and you'll find great photo op spots, gasoline alley, and other fun activities.
